Apple Pie With A Crumb Topping

Pie Crust - makes 2
1-1/4 cup of flour
1 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of Crisco shortening
6 tablespoons of cold water

        6 large apples, peeled, sliced, drizzled with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
        3/4 cup of sugar (more may be needed if apples are tart)
        1/4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, salt, & nutmeg
        1 tablespoon of flour
        1 tablespoon of cold butter

        3 tablespoons of flour
        1/4 teaspoon of salt
        1 tablespoon of sugar
        1 teaspoon of cinnamon
        1 tablespoon of butter
        1/8 cup of milk (only for brushing top, will not use all of it)

  • Combine flour & salt; cut the shortening into the flour using a pastry blender. 

      • Add water, and stir with a fork, adding more water if needed. Roll out and put the bottom crust into the pie pan. Poke holes in it. 
      • Preheat oven to 400 ◦ 

      1. Combine and mix well: 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg & salt.
      1. Stir into apples
      1. Pour into pie pan.
      1. Top with 1 tablespoon of butter, cut into pieces.
      1. Roll out the top of the pie and place over the top of the apples. Poke holes in it.
      1. Prepare the topping by combining all of the ingredients. Use a fork do do this.
      1. Brush the top of the pie crust with the mik, and then sprinkle the topping over the pie crust.
      1. Bake for 10 minutes at 400, then at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
