How to Make Homemade Yogurt | Homemade Crockpot Yogurt


  • Ingredients:

  • 1/2 gallon (8 cups) whole milk 
  • 1/2 cup commercial plain yogurt that says “Live and Active Cultures” on the tub. I like to use Dannon, Yoplait plain or Vanilla Yogurt if I forgot to reserve some of my own yogurt.

  • Directions:

  • In a large crock pot, add the milk. Put on the lid. Turn it on low for around        2 -1/2 hours.
  • Unplug the crock pot and allow it sit for 3 hours. I find it helpful to set a timer.
  • Stir in the 1/2 cup of yogurt. Replace the lid of the crock pot & cover with a bath towel or a blanket. Let rest for 8 to 12 hours (I  keep it in there overnight)  In the morning you’ll have yogurt!
  • Before I refrigerate my yogurt, I put it in a colander that is lined with either cheesecloth or an old sheer curtain. The colander sits in a bowl to collect the whey. I do this because I prefer thick Greek-like yogurt. To skip this step just transfer the yogurt from the crock-pot to a bowl or jar and allow it to chill for a few hours before planning to serve it. It will thicken up. Don't forget to reserve a 1/2 cup of this yogurt for your next batch.
Add-ins include fresh, canned or frozen fruit, jelly/jam, sweetener like raw sugar, pure maple sugar or unfiltered honey. Regular white table sugar if that is all you have on hand.
