How To Train Your Puppy - Click Training

Training dogs with a clicker is one method that will show how to train your puppy - with click training. It should be noted that when training puppies they respond better when treats are used as a reward. The training sessions will be more productive if they are a bit hungry. It is suggested that it is best to do the training right before their next meal.

How To Clicker Train Your Dog - Not To Kill Your Chickens

  1. Before beginning this, your dog should already know a few other commands such at sit, stay or lie. These can be used to distract him.
  2. Start by putting your dog on a leash.  Allow the dog some slack, while at the same time know that you can restrain him quickly when needed.
  3. Walk your dog/puppy towards the chickens, making sure you praise them verbally or physically  for their passive behavior.  When training dogs with a clicker, make sure you are using the clicker while praising them so that they learn that the clicker sound means they are getting what they want. In this case verbal and physical praise.
  4. If your dog switches to a more aggressive behavior, such as attempting to go after a chicken, withdraw your praise (the positive stimuli that they want) from them. Personally, I often add treats while training in addition to the verbal and physical praise. It's personal preference. There are many people who say you should never give a treat to their dog when training. I don't think it's that big of a deal.
  5. Be aware of your dog's body language. When your dog begins to strain on the leash or is about ready to go after the target (cat, chicken, turkey or whatever) try to distract them with other commands such as sit, stay, give-me-paw. Don't forget to use the clicker and immediately give them the reward for their good behavior. This will teach your dog that when they are passive around chickens they will get a reward, However, when they are aggressive .there is nothing to gain.  Repeat the exercise daily.

Teaching A Dog With Shock Collars

I bet this heading caught your attention. "Shock Collar" sounds pretty harsh and even a bit cruel. Those not familiar with these training collars aren't aware that you don't necessarily have to shock the dog to make your dog obedient. Shock collars have a setting on them that allow  you to set the collar on a vibrate setting. These collars work well with strong-willed dogs who don't respond well to clicker training. We had to use this for our dog Duchess. We mostly used the vibrate setting. She hated it and responded well. The only time we really used the shock feature is when she would chase cars or a passing 4-wheeler. It was more for her safety so she wouldn't get hit or killed by a passing car. To use this method, follow the steps for the clicker training. Instead of using the clicker, you will be using the shock/vibrate feature along  with a firm verbal "No" when they are displaying the aggressive behavior. Don't forget to reward their good passive behavior with treats, verbal praise, and/or affection.

This is our dog Dutchess,  you will notice that she is wearing a Dogtra Training collar. We used the collar for years, it served us well. We had no complaints and plan to get another one for our dog Spike. The other collar lasted us for over 12 years. We can highly recommend it. The last time I looked at it, it still had a 4-1/2 star review with 575  customer reviews.
